These consist of a system of approximately 60 lakes of different shapes and sizes, located in the Achupallas area of the Alausi region. It is in these lakes, in the first few days of September that an unusual natural event takes place; thousands of birds fall into the water in a form of mass suicide. This phenomenon has been named ‘The Tribute’ by the local indigenous populations. Many different theories exist on why this phenomenon occurs. The science world of course can try to make sense of it, however there still exists an air of mystery in this remote spot, where you can hike, fish and share experiences with the remote indigenous people that live here. The Ozogoche lakes are located 3 hours from Abraspungo. |
