Alausi is around 100kms from Riobamba and the market here is every Sunday. It is not a typical Inter-Andean market since a number of people come here from the towns of the sub tropics with their distinct products and customs giving the market a mixed regional relevance and context.
It is the most important and significant market in the south of the province. On the streets and in the squares you can encounter indigenous people from the páramo with their colourful ponchos, aciales and zamarros alongside the countryside people, montubios, from the coast with their short sleeved shirts and light trousers.
The ethnic and social diversity of the province is present in Alausi. Without exception Indians, Montubios and Cholos (mixed race) come together to enjoy the typical Sunday dish, Alausi´s the tasty roasted pork with corn – hornado con mote.
